Historic Route/Timket Festival in Gondar
The main highlight of this Ethiopia tour is to visit the celebration of Timiket or Ethiopian Epiphany in the historic town of Gonder which is one of the colorful holidays celebrated by the Ethiopian Orthodox church faithfully every year. Other destinations in this historic route include a visit to The Blue Nile Falls, Monasteries in Lake Tana, The Royal enclosure of the Gonder Castles said to be “The African Camelot”, the Giant Obelisk of Axum, and the magnificent Rock Hewn churches of Lalibela!

12 Jan- Arrival + Addis

Arrive at the Bole International Airport and transfer to your hotel. After checking in, begin with the exciting city tour of Addis Ababa! Visit the National Museum, Mercato - the largest open-air market in Africa and climb the Entoto Mountain (3,200 meters high) to get a panoramic view of the capital.

13 Jan-Addis-Lalibela

This morning you will fly to Lalibela, [named after King Lalibela] – a town known for its distinctive rock-hewn churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, which are pilgrimage sites for Coptic Christians and are carved out of rock, this town is also known as the second Jerusalem!

You will be transferred to your hotel for check-in before you can start your tour. The Rock Hewn churches of Lalibela are grouped into three different clusters, the Northern cluster/the first group of the churches, which are six in number and symbolize the earthly Jerusalem, the second group which represent the heavenly Jerusalem and the third group famous in the world of Bete Giorgis or the house of Saint George which is also dedicated to the ship of Noah.

14 Jan-Lalibela

In the morning you will hike to Asheten Mariam where you will spot the first project of King Lalibela, when you reach the top of Mt.Asheten (3200 asl) you will get an extraordinary view of Lalibela and its surroundings, you will then climb down for a lunch break. In the afternoon we will drive to Yimrehane Kirstos (42 km) to see the church under the cave. Then drive back to Lalibela for an overnight.

15 Jan-Lalibela-Axum

In the morning, we will head to the airport to fly to the oldest capital of Ethiopia, Axum – also known for its tall, carved obelisks relics of the ancient Kingdom of Axum. After checking in to your hotel, you will do a city tour of Axum, this includes visiting the Stelae Park, the tomb of Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, the Dingur Palace, the legend bath of Queen Sheba and finally the church of St. Mary/Zion believed to be the resting place of the original Ark of the Covenant.

16 Jan-Axum-Semien Mountains NP

Today we will drive to the Semien Mountains National Park, here you will have the chance to see the highest mountain in Ethiopia; Mt.Ras Dejen 4623m where we will afterwards cross the Tekeze River and experience the zigzag road of Limalimo. Upon arrival you will get the chance to spot the endemic Gelada Baboon around your overnight place.

17 Jan-Semien Mountains NP
We will drive to Sankaber (3,300m) today. Sankaber is the base spot where most trekking starts. This area was once covered with Afro-montane forest dominated by Juniper, Haginia Abyssinia, St. John’s wort, Giant heather and the like. Troops of Gelada baboon can also be seen here. We will visit the Jinbar waterfall, the splendid panorama of the Simen Mountains, the Gelada baboons, birds of different species and other animals. In the afternoon we will drive to Chenek to spot other endemic animals.

18 Jan-Semien Mountains NP-Gonder

Today you visit Gondar - the 17th century capital of Ethiopia, known for its walled Fasil Ghebbi fortress and palace compound once the seat of Ethiopian Emperors. This afternoon, you will visit the most colorful religious celebration of the eve of Timket (Epiphany) which is held to memorize the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist. All the replicas of the Ark of the Covenant will be accompanied by crowds of colorfully dressed Christians to a nearby water place. And the priests and the deacons of the churches will spend the night praying, singing religious songs and dancing.

19 Jan-Gonder

After an early breakfast, you will attend the celebration in which the replicas of the Ark of the Covenant will be accompanied back to their respective churches with some dancing and singing. In the afternoon, we will visit the Imperial Castle Compound of Gondar, the Bath of Emperor Fasiladas and the church of Debre Birhan Sillassie famous for its wall and ceiling paintings.

20 Jan-Gonder-Bahir Dar

In the afternoon, you will have a boat trip on Ethiopia’s largest water body - Lake Tana (3,600 Km Sq.) to visit the island Monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret (14th Century AD) and Azwa Mariam (14th Century AD).

21 Jan-Bahir Dar-Addis +Departure

In the morning we will drive to the Blue Nile falls (35km.south east of Bahir -Dar) through the 17th century bridge or by boat on the river (400-500 meters wide) before the water is diverted to the hydroelectric power station, you will be able to watch a number of different species of birds on the way along the riverine forest, while enjoying the spectacular view of the fall that crushes down from a 46 meter cliff. We will then head back to Bahir Dar for lunch and then fly back to Addis Ababa for your departure.
